Food Waste

Kia Ora fellow bloggers, for this week my literacy class has been doing an essay and i have finished hope you enjoy.
Food Waste

Food is really important because people are not only realizing that there are not endless amounts of food, there are only limited amounts but also wasting food, that is why I believe that we can make a difference in wasting our food and start reducing our food don’t you think?. First I will talk about wasted tonnes of money on unnecessary food, second I will talk about reducing food at home, third I will talk about why we should eat bugs, last but not least why we should donate. Food waste is an extreme issue in New Zealand. As a country, we waste an estimate of $872 million dollars worth of food every year. that represents 122,500 tonnes of food sent to landfills plenty of food to feed everyone in Dunedin for two years.

New Zealand wasted tonnes of money on unnecessary food. In New Zealand, we throw away 157,389 tonnes of food a year that is equivalent to 271 jumbo jets of food that have to go somewhere to rot instead of being eaten. All of this food is worth about $1.17 billion dollars each year. remember this, food is limited so stop wasting money now on food you don’t need while you can, and start making a list of food, about what you actually need.

Many people don’t realize how much food they throw away, from uneaten to leftovers and rotten stuff. About 94 percent of food is thrown away and it ends up in landfills and compost facilities. So when you get home from the store, take the time to wash, dry, chop, dice, slice, and place your food items in clear storage containers for snacks and easy cooking. Shop in your fridge first! Cook or eat what you already have at home before buying more from the supermarket.

But wait there is a solution Why shouldn’t we use insects as food? Insects are great sources of nutrients with 80% protein, and they have energy, rich fat and micro-nutrients, and minerals. Eating insects also provide more iron than beef and provides a great source of iron to combat iron deficiency in people all around the world. They taste good as well.
More importantly, they are good for the environment, producing them doesn't trash our waterways, there aren't the same costs to what we buy at the supermarket.

By Donating Food we can help our neighbors in need and people that are suffering, individuals can support their local communities and reduce environmental impact. Donated food can also include leftovers from events and surplus food inventory. Food Banks online provide a food parcel service and a directory of NZ food banks for those in need. Kiwi harvest is a company that has strict food handling policies and a refrigerated van to ensure the integrity of the food throughout the supply chain. We work to match the food we collect to the needs of our recipient charities – quantity, frequency of delivery, type of food required, facilities to store, cook or distribute food.
The food act has provided clarity and reassurance to potential food donors who want to donate surplus food to charities. The Act contains an Immunity for food donors clause which ensures that surplus food can be donated to charitable causes in New Zealand without fear of liability.

So remember that food is limited, there are not endless amounts of food, you should stop wasting food now. Buy food that you actually need and make a list of the things that you need, When you go home remember to take the time to wash, dry, chop, dice, slice, and place your food items in clear storage containers for snacks and easy cooking, also remember Insects are great sources of nutrients and by Donating Food we can help our neighbors in need and people that are suffering, individuals can support their local communities and reduce environmental impact. Thank you, thank you for listening.

Clever Counting in Samoan!

Hi Bloggers,

For the last two weeks in Samoan we have been learning to count to 10.  It is really easy, as it is very similar to Maori!  Have a look at my Scratch programme I wrote to help people learn how to count.
Can you count to 10 in a different langauge?
